Prayer

Made with Unreal Engine (I do not own any of the art assets used in the game)

Overview

Prayer is a short thriller cinematic about a desperate father named Cheng trying to save his dying son. According to the village elders, the only way is to go to the forbidden shrine to seek for help.

During his journey, he had troubles finding his way through the mountains and came across an eccentric old man and asked him for directions. Little did he know...

The production of Prayer took place over the course of 10 weeks with 3 other members.

Roles & Responsibilities

Role: Technical Artist, Producer

Being the producer and technical artist in the team, my faith was tested as I:

  • Discuss the feasible elements that can be accomplished.

  • Manage the tasks of my teammates to ensure things stay on track.

  • Keep track of assets used for crediting purposes.

  • Set up a workflow pipeline that is optimized and easy for my team to use.

  • Create blocking shots and place in elements that are involved in each shot.

  • Set up AI for character movement on terrain due to outdoors environment.

The final render

Post-Mortem

The production of Prayer was pretty smooth as members were equipped with required skill sets to perform their tasks well. We are all proud of the project as it turned out better than we expected.

Although there were some technical issues with version control, we solved it rather quickly and was able to get back on track.

Thank you for reading about our work on Prayer!

Production process

AI & NavMesh

We required uneven terrain to give a sense of realism and moving objects via transform in the sequencer was not viable as it would be too tedious to make the animation follow against the uneven path smoothly. Thus, I decided to utilize Unreal Engine's NavMesh instead.

Blueprint Workflow

We wanted to give the feeling of flashback and had to re-use certain camera shots so the blueprint workflow was adjusted such that it was easy to test individual shots.

Shot Blocking

In order to produce camera techniques such as arc shots to build up tension as to what the character sees, we utilized camera tracks in our shots.
